The new, uncensored, not to mention amazingly attractive, version of the 1987 movie The Bodyguard hits theaters today. It's the story of a hotel chambermaid who takes a job as a bodyguard for a Hollywood star, and stars as a great American movie in the process.
With a little help from its charming star, the film has all the elements of a proper comedy: the improbable, the peculiar, the improbable, the improbable. But of course it's not really a comedy, it's a romance that manages to move and at times excite in a way that only the best dramas can.
This is the second movie produced by the director Marlon Brando, who also starred in the film. One of the strangest things about the movie is that it's pretty much totally Brando.
He plays a singer-songwriter named Charlie Lawson who's having trouble with drugs, women, and his career. After recording the original version of the song that he writes and stars in, he has a two-week break from performing, during which he becomes obsessed with doing a show at the local high school. One of the characters from the show becomes the next woman in his life, and through her Charlie discovers how to survive as a musician.
The star of the show is a beautiful girl named Jamie Perry (Teri Garr), who's obsessed with having a career in music. It's her fourth year at high school, and she's never done any better than being a side player.
When Charlie auditioned for the school and got into the show, he literally saved her life. She was having a rough time that day, and his words, his music, his therapy, and even his guitar ended up bringing her out of her troubles.
As they got to know each other better, it became clear that Charlie is a little rough, and Jamie is a little spoiled. But in spite of these differences, they both become equally committed to their musical dreams.
In this version of the film, many things have been cut. The whole drug thing is gone, and Charlie's backstage career as a musician has been reduced to the story of his songwriting and its success. But in those places where the movie doesn't deviate from the original script, it feels more powerful.
