Version 1.0 of the Network Audio System (NAS) [1][2] is the "default" sound server for the Windows network environment, and is the standard format for audio streaming over the Internet. It is the format most commonly implemented by media streaming servers. The software library that powers this framework, Microsoft's NAudio[3] is available to all developers under an open source license, and the source code is freely available. However, one requirement of the license is a patent assignment agreement from Microsoft, which is not free in the United States (since it requires that Microsoft provide financial compensation to Microsoft). A company in the United States known as SDL (SoundDevice LLC) holds patents for network audio in relation to the software library that powers the NAS.
Currently, even though there is no patent licensing agreement between the two, as far as the software developer is concerned, NAS is the preferred format because of how reliable it is, and the amount of work done to make it even more reliable.
Numerous network-ready audio plugins for applications such as Windows Media Player, Winamp, RealPlayer, and others already exist. Some of these plugins have been reverse engineered or even built from scratch, and now require the use of NAS in order to be functional.
While the use of NAS is encouraged by default in applications that can have it enabled, the ability to force the use of NAS is also available in various Windows Applications, including Windows Vista and newer versions of Windows.
NAS is a general purpose library and can be used in applications other than streaming audio. It has been used in games as a way to implement network multiplayer play.[4]

To do this, use the Client List widget and select the Local Settings checkbox and click on the Start Scan button.
(This will start a scan for any possible NETAudio devices on the network.)
When NETAudio Streamer is started, it will begin sending out a streamer protocol probe request.
If the probe request is being sent, the network devices using the streamer protocol will receive a streamer protocol probe response.
NETAudio will detect any devices that are using the streamer protocol and create a network address for each device.
Next you can select from the following three options
- View/Manage Shared Music / Devices
- Listen to Shared Music
- Lock Music Volume
Using the View/Manage Shared Music / Devices widget is useful for any applications that can be listed and played over the network.
To see what you can play, click on the Play All button.
Using the Listen to Shared Music widget will allow you to hear music that is shared over the network.
Click on the Play All button and you will see all the shared music is made available over the network.
NetAudio will automatically detect all the devices that are running the streamer protocol and will create separate network addresses for each device.
