Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Thatcher was the first female Prime Minister. She led the country from 1979-1990 however she led the conservative party from 1975. Many people referred to Thatcher as “The Iron Lady”.  As Prime Minister she directed British troops to get back the Falklands from Argentina in 1982. During her time as Prime Minister she caused lots of controversy, one bit being when she introduced the tax poll. Thatcher also suffered strong opposition during the mining strike in 1984 and 1985. These situations caused rioting across the country. Some may say these riots were the reason she was replaced in 1990 by John Mayor. In 1992, Margaret Thatcher stood down as PM and joined the House of Lords. 
During Thatcher’s time as PM unemployment rose significantly, doubling within her first term. Unemployment rose to three million by the end of 1982. Many Thatcher supporters believe this was due to her new structural reform of the labour market. Margaret Thatcher was widely known in the UK for her dislike of the trade union movement. It was known that trade unions were popular during the 1970’s and Thatcher did what she could to reduce the influence Trade Unions had on Britain. 
Thatcher suffered with dementia in her later life. This then led to her having a stroke in 2013,which resulted in her death. She had a full military funeral held at St Paul’s Cathedral.
