There was a flood of votes on an article a few days ago, which has now died.  I noticed today that there were still 400 votes on the story.  I refreshed the page and the votes had disappeared.  Looking at the diffs, I see that someone had modified the URL of the article in order to change the vote count: were a lot of votes, but none are now visible.   Does anyone know if this is a possible DOS attack?  Is HN providing some kind of mitigation for this kind of attack?

If you can be convinced that you didn't do it, you could create an account,
submit a comment, then check back a few days later and see if the comment
appeared.

well you could just use the account that was compromised...
I don't know how it's possible to be compromised if you haven't logged in since
it was created.

Do you mean when the URL was originally submitted and the article gained a lot
of votes? Or have votes been lost over time (like if you were the one who
flooded the system?)

The article was submitted by someone with a different email address.

Right... and then an account was created for the user with the right email
address.

It's not like "qmail" email accounts are secretly compromised.
