AutoCAD is now a de facto standard in the CAD industry.

Founded in 1982 by two computer-science graduates from Cornell University, AutoCAD was originally designed for architectural work on desktop computers. But after Autodesk acquired the company in 1988, it expanded to include industrial and mechanical design. Today, the company says AutoCAD is the largest selling software package for 3D design.
A key driver behind AutoCAD's success has been its growth in use. In the 1980s, the app's primary market was the market for companies that used AutoCAD to create and modify architectural and engineering drawings. Today, the software is used by a far wider range of organizations including manufacturing companies, scientists, engineers, architects, land-use planners, and automobile makers.
The most common workgroup strategy is to assign one company or organization to be the "Master" user, who creates the models and designs. Then, a copy of that design is handed to the "Maintenance" user, who makes changes to the design as needed. The system is automated to the point that only the Master user needs to enter data, and the Maintenace user can make minor changes without a data entry or re-drawing of the model.

AutoCAD can generate data in the.dwg format, which is supported by many other software applications. In 2018, Autodesk added new functionality that enables users to import AutoCAD files and import/export.dwg files to other software.
