The Basics

The 2015 version of AutoCAD is available for Windows 7, 8, or 10 and Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10). Some clients may require a driver or other software for a connected physical device.
AutoCAD is a non-numeric (2D) and numeric (3D) drafting and design application for professional architects, engineers, drafters, and other users. It has been frequently used for a variety of industrial, engineering, surveying, architectural, and construction needs. Initially developed as a desktop application, AutoCAD has been adapted to run as a web-based application and as mobile apps.
Extensions and Products
AutoCAD has a wide variety of extensions, or add-ons, available, many of which are created by users and sold through the Autodesk Developer Network (ADN). Some extensions are available free of charge; others require a charge. Extensions add additional functionality and commonly introduce new features or options. Users can purchase and download all extensions from ADN and add them to the interface. AutoCAD can automatically install updates to existing extensions, as well as the operating system, upon activation.
Communication with AutoCAD can occur through the command line, Autodesk Live Community, email, Microsoft Outlook, and other applications. Depending on the version of AutoCAD, additional communication with the program may be through a web browser, a web service, or both. This depends on how the AutoCAD is used. If a client is using AutoCAD as a web-based application, then the client can access a web-based interface using the "View" button on the top right of the screen or the "right" and "left" buttons

CGM and DXF are designed as open standards for interchange. CGM was developed from DG/UX and DOS-compatible COBOL and is available on DOS and Windows. DXF was developed for DOS from the beginning and was not designed to be compatible with other file formats.  The standard CGM format has been used for exporting AutoCAD drawings to vector format since version 13.
