A struggling alcoholic spends $140 a week on booze, so how much does it cost to help him get sober?
About $11,000, according to a new study by researchers at Boston University’s School of Medicine.
That’s a lot of money to spend on a person who may not stay sober for long, said Dr. Kimberly Casares, one of the study’s authors. “We have invested a lot of time and money and we need to ensure that this works,” she said.
Casares and her colleagues used a nationwide sample of 1,984 homeless people who participated in a 2006 study. They found that about two-thirds of the people were not diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder, and their average annual income was just over $10,000.
To provide such homeless people with a trial of residential treatment, the researchers analyzed the price tags associated with each service. Then they compared those prices with average payments made by public housing agencies in the same geographic area.
The study authors did not include addiction treatment services provided by private nonprofit organizations, so the study provides a conservative estimate of the amount spent on a homeless person's treatment, Casares said.
The researchers found that the average cost of residential treatment for homeless people was $11,501, including such services as food, lodging, counseling and medical care. The average public housing payment was $19,654.
“This is not only a cost that has been incurred, but it has also been felt by the homeless,” Casares said. “It’s a real burden for the homeless and the people who pay to take care of them.”
To help such homeless people address their substance abuse problems, the researchers recommend that public housing authorities and local homeless service agencies collectively raise the money they spend on such people, Casares said.
For people who don’t live in public housing, though, it’s possible that they could be billed by a drug or alcohol counselor or rehab facility.
