In 1982, Harvard University professor David Lufton developed the software for the third stage of the first Space Shuttle mission, STS-3. The flight was aborted due to problems with the right solid rocket booster, so NASA put the on hold for over a year, until the software was complete. While originally written in the PL/1 computer language, the software was later rewritten in the C language. (In 1982, PL/1 was the leading language for computer programming in the US. It was followed by C.) With the C language, Lufton was able to build the software in an object-oriented environment. A hardware description language called "HDL", written by Lufton's friend David Wallen, was used to design and develop the software.
