AutoCAD is a PC-based desktop application.
The basic AutoCAD features are provided by a set of AutoCAD blocks (UI, menus, and dialog boxes) that typically appear at the top-left of the main screen.
The most visible element of an AutoCAD drawing is the drawing canvas or (paper space), on which drawings are created and viewed. The canvas is a 2D (2-dimensional) plane on which objects and features are placed, modified, and viewed. The canvas itself does not have a size or position (unless otherwise specified). Instead, the canvas is always a certain distance away from the user.
The rest of AutoCAD is made up of blocks. Blocks represent common aspects of 2D drafting, like creating a circle or setting up a simple 3D (3-dimensional) drawing. Blocks are useful because they represent some function (or combination of functions) that a user wants to accomplish. They can also be modified, and combined with other blocks to build complex drafting objects.
In most cases, a block is a command that can be triggered by a keystroke.
The most basic command blocks are the block “Select” block and the “Select Edge” block. The Select block can be used to select objects for modification or deletion; the Select Edge block can be used to modify the edges of selected objects. In both cases, a cursor is displayed, which can be moved to select various regions of the drawing canvas.
Blocks can also be combined to build complex features or commands. To do so, a block is combined with one or more blocks. Any block can be combined with any other block.
For instance, the “Select Edge” block can be combined with the “Move” block to create a command that will move a selected edge to a new location.
More complex blocks can be combined in an endless variety of ways.
Once a command is created, it can be modified and added to another command. This is done by triggering the block and dragging it to a new location in the drawing canvas.
