A daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, and an attractive, outgoing princess, with her charm, generosity, unfailing tact and ready concern for others, she soon became the most popular member of British royalty. Trowbridge presents a lively portrait of the woman who dealt successfully with the pressures of a kindly if domineering mother-in-law, Queen Victoria, and a devoted though frequently unfaithful husband, as well as lameness and premature deafness.William Rutherford Hayes Trowbridge, B.A., was born in Barbados in 1866 of American parentage and graduated from Yale University in 1887. He was the Barbados representative of the family business H. Trowbridge's Sons, West India Merchants of New Haven, 1887-91, and the representative in West Indies of the Colonial Bank of London, 1891-1900. Moving to England, he was commissioned as Lieutenant First Cadet Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), and resigned in 1907 with the rank of Captain. During the First World War he was attached to Section Samtaire Anglaise No 1 as a motor ambulance driver in Lorraine, and then assigned to the British Legation in Copenhagen in charge of food supplies for the British army. He published several novels, biographies, travel titles and plays, including Gossip of the Carrabees: Sketches of Anglo-West-Indian Life (1895), A Girl of the Multitude (1902), The Little Marquis of Brandenburg: The Boyhood of the Great Frederick (1905), Court Beauties of Old Whitehall: Historiettes of the Restoration (1906), The Sisters of Napoleon: Elise, Pauline, and Caroline Bonaparte after the Testimony of their Contemporaries (1908), In the Sun with a Passport (1925), and The High Garden (1928). He died in London in 1938.
