Points are connected to form a line, and a line is connected to form a curve. The 3-D object is formed by a series of connected lines and curves in X, Y, and Z directions.
AutoCAD is also a 2-D technical drafting software application, providing standard drawing tools for drawing circles, arcs, straight lines, rectangles, squares, ellipses, trapezoids, triangles, freehand lines, and so forth.
3-D capabilities include importing and exporting CAD data, adding and editing 3-D objects, and controlling display properties. The objects can be directly imported from other 3-D CAD applications, including the file formats of Inventor, SolidWorks, ArchiCAD, and CATIA. AutoCAD can also import and export format files from other software applications.
While AutoCAD was originally designed to be a 2-D drafting application, the 3-D capability of AutoCAD has become much more comprehensive and powerful. When compared to other CAD applications, AutoCAD has evolved from being a technical drafting application to a general-purpose CAD application, and now acts as the "mother" application for various third-party CAD applications.
