I think you’ll find parts of my story poignant and even humorous as I crashed life and learned how to play the hand I was dealt. Like all of us, my life's story has a beginning and an end. In between those two poles are the events that shape me into who I am today. My life is not unlike a poker game, I didn’t get to pick my cards, I had to play the cards I was dealt. I have always found the advice in Kenny Rogers lyrics from the Gambler to be words to live by; “You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run.” In my case I went all in early in my life, and until now never really looked back.Life is not always fair. Some of us are born into poverty, while others of us are born with a silver spoon; some of us are physically and/or emotionally abused, while others of us had a loving supportive family. All of us must deal with what life deals us, the good, the bad, and the ugly. How we handle those things is what makes us who we are. I came to realize early in my life, no one owed me anything, not my parents, not my teachers, not even the government. They may have started me down life’s path or influenced me through phases of my development, but in the end, I had to take what I learned and build my own life and hopefully along the way becoming a useful member of society. The jury is still out on the final outcome.This is a true story of my life. It’s factual, or at least as factual as my somewhat senile mind can recall. It describes the people and events in my life that influenced and impacted what I made of myself. As I wrote this book, I found myself wondering what if I’d done this instead of that, would I have been a better person, would I have become rich and famous, would I be happier with my life? Well, as I crashed life, sometimes like a brick through a plate glass window, I discovered you get very few do-overs, and you can’t unwring the bell. Some of my story is sad and has left me with some physical and emotional scars; some of it is humorous and will make you laugh out loud; some of it will have you asking did that really happen; but all of it is true. As my grandfather often reminded me; real life can be stranger than fiction.I had as most of us have had, people I’ve met along the way that have had a hand in molding and influencing me, most of it was positive. This book talks to and about those people that has the most significant impact on me, helping to lay the foundation for who I became and setting me on a path to tackle and deal with what life dealt me. I believe the people and events I describe in the book prepared me for seminal events in my life and helped me dodge many of the potholes in life’s fast lane, helping prepared me for the many crossroads of life I faced. As I looked back, now with the benefit of hindsight, I not only see the path taken, but I get to consider the path not taken. I haven’t and won’t dwell on “what if” moments, in real life you don’t get do-overs. I’m reminded of that great philosopher Yogi Berra, who famously said, “When you come to a fork in the road take it!”
