AutoCAD Architecture
The basic user interface consists of the screen, menus, and palettes, all displayed in a window on the computer desktop. AutoCAD is multi-platform, meaning it can run on multiple computer platforms: Windows (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10), macOS (Mac OS X), Linux, Solaris, and other operating systems.
AutoCAD features a drawing window for creating drawings (see figure), which includes tools for drawing rectangles, circles, ellipses, arcs, splines, and lines.
Vector objects are drawn as closed paths (loops) that can be composed together to represent more complex geometric shapes and objects. Vector objects include shapes, lines, and text. The object type can be customized, which allows users to create custom objects. Users can also manually edit the object as they work. Any custom object can be linked to another drawing via the link feature.

Drawing Filters
Drawing filters are used to influence what is visible and what is not, which applies to both vector and bitmap objects. They allow users to ignore or hide, change the color, change the size, and apply special effects to the objects. These filters may be applied at the object level, the layer level, or the drawing level.

A regular drawing file includes blocks of data for different objects. The block of information for an object can be defined and manipulated. 
AutoCAD supports non-graphical drawing objects such as sheet-sets. A sheet-set is a named set of paper sheets, which can be labeled, annotated, used as a background for other drawings or placed in a separate file with an index. These files are in a  drawing file's block of data and can be manipulated with the same commands and tools available for other objects.
Usage
Any drawing objects can be selected and moved. Any command may be applied to it as if it were drawn. Blocks of data may be cut, copied, inserted, merged, split and sorted. These can also be drawn, sketched, modified, and printed.
The table below illustrates the difference in object behavior between the different types of objects (commands) and operations (tools).
Modeling commands
 These commands create (start, terminate, delete), modify (spline, triangulate, smoothen, extrude, smooth, impositions, plane, wall, construct walls), move (zoom, rotate), create faces (subdivision surface), and edit (offset) three-dimensional objects.
Navigation commands
 These commands perform absolute and relative movements within a drawing area, enter text and data, edit blocks of data, and create collections of other objects.
Layout commands
 These commands create, modify, view, and list layouts, specify points, build paths, and calculate fields and fillets.
Measuring and drawing commands
 These commands specify, create, mark, and join lines, create and draw arcs, and specify and create ellipses, circles, and polygons.
Mastering commands
 These commands define master drawings and coordinate systems (e.g. GCS), specify and measure dimensions, specify text and annotations, specify views and clipping, export as DXF, EDA, PDF, or DWG, and export to PDF or DWF.
Rendering and rendering commands
 These commands render and print drawings, specify viewports, and generate graphics, among others.
User commands
 These commands perform general drawing actions or user input and user settings.
Analysis commands
 These commands perform regression analysis for curve and surface objects, simulate mesh topology, calculate color, and perform graphic transformations.
