In 2007, Autodesk introduced a family of products—AutoCAD MEP, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD LT, and AutoCAD Mechanical—for the architectural and mechanical design of buildings and other building-related structures. AutoCAD MEP, introduced in 2008, provides the ability to import and edit Building Information Model (BIM) data such as geometric model, structural model, network model, and file formats such as IGES and STEP.

AutoCAD's release of AutoLISP enabled the creation of building information models, which can be linked to other AutoCAD components, such as schedules, floor plans, views, and other elements of design. AutoLISP also enabled a new visualization feature: creation of visual hyperlinks between drawings that have been joined and aligned. In January 2011, Autodesk introduced the Topology Builder, a 3D modeling plug-in for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. The Topology Builder enables users to build complex 3D shapes by moving and aligning one or more imported meshes with respect to other imported meshes and Boolean operations on their faces.

Content management
AutoCAD maintains a secure repository of content, called the Shared Content Manager (SCM). The SCM, which can be thought of as a web server, enables a user to access, edit, synchronize, and share content that resides on their computer, including multiple AutoCAD drawings. AutoCAD 2014 introduced features to allow sharing directly from the drawing itself.
AutoCAD lets designers create their own content management application. There are numerous third-party content management tools that are compatible with AutoCAD (see below for more information). Other content management systems include those that integrate with CAD data that is stored in the common data model (CDM). AutoCAD, however, was never meant to be used as a content manager in such a way, and in fact developers are discouraged from using it for this purpose.

3D modeling

User interface
