History of AutoCAD
AutoCAD was the first CAD (computer-aided design) program to be offered in the context of a graphical user interface. Unlike the initial release of CAD programs in the 1960s, which were usually based on command-line systems, AutoCAD introduced a graphical user interface that has been in use ever since. Many of the design and drafting tools in AutoCAD have evolved to support the more intuitive features of the user interface. AutoCAD’s initial release was in 1982 on a 16-bit Intel 80286 processor with a low-end graphics display. AutoCAD 2020 is designed to run on a 64-bit 64-bit Apple Mac, a 64-bit Intel i7 processor, and other 64-bit processors.

AutoCAD is supplied in two editions: AutoCAD LT, which is intended for simple drafting, and AutoCAD, which provides more complex and powerful capabilities. In May 2011, the Autodesk Blog reported that AutoCAD LT would be added to the AutoCAD 2010 Ultimate Edition. AutoCAD LT includes nearly all of AutoCAD's capabilities but lacks some more advanced features of AutoCAD. For example, it does not have the ability to combine blocks into shapes or weld faces together. However, it does have support for both the AutoCAD drawing/shading engine and the full-featured AutoCAD modeling engine. AutoCAD LT is supplied on a DVD with a registration key that can be used to activate a software version, and a one-year subscription to Autodesk's Design Review cloud-based collaboration platform is included with the software.
AutoCAD includes various features commonly found in many other CAD software programs, such as editing, graphing, and dimensioning tools. However, AutoCAD differs from most other CAD programs in that it is designed for the 2D drafting and modeling of architectural and mechanical designs.
