History
Autodesk launched AutoCAD in 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. The development of AutoCAD began in 1981 when Autodesk Software (AS) and Thomas J. Watson Inc. (TJWI) co-founded Autodesk (with a focus on product development and design engineering software). In 1982, Autodesk released AutoCAD, initially only for the Apple II, to the public. In 1983, the first Commodore 64 version of AutoCAD was released.
In 1986, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT, which runs on personal computers, such as Apple Macintosh and PC, without graphics capability, to the public. In 1992, AutoCAD LT version 2.0 was renamed Autodesk Architectural Desktop (ADT). In 1994, AutoCAD Release 3, renamed as AutoCAD 2004, was officially released. In 1999, Autodesk released AutoCAD R14, which introduced new toolbars and other user interface elements. In 2000, Autodesk released AutoCAD Architecture 2002, followed by AutoCAD Architecture 2010. Autodesk released AutoCAD 2014, which added the ability to link to other project files. In 2009, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD R18, which introduced a more intuitive user interface and new capabilities. In 2013, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD R19, with additional features for architectural workflows. In 2015, Autodesk released AutoCAD R20, which added building information modeling (BIM) and other new features, such as new visual styles, interactive editing, and full geometry support.
