AutoCAD started life as a plotter-based version of the competing drafting package of the same name, also developed by Autodesk, and adopted the platform and graphic display features from that program. While the plotter version of AutoCAD supported a variety of graphic display options including pen plotters, inkjet, and laserjet printers, the first released CAD/plotter version supported only pen plotters.
The first graphical user interface (GUI) version of AutoCAD was the 1988 release AutoCAD 2.0. In addition to improved graphics support, AutoCAD 2.0 included the familiar MS-DOS window environment, introduced the main menu, and supported icons. (AutoCAD 1.0 was released in 1981.) However, the AutoCAD 2.0 plotter version only supported pen plotters. A variety of plotting devices were supported in later versions of AutoCAD (3.0 to 4.6) including plotters, inkjet, laserjet, and all supported plotter models from before that release.
AutoCAD development continued at Autodesk, and by the time version 2.0 was released in 1988, the version number had changed to AutoCAD 3.0. With the launch of AutoCAD 3.0, it supported many of the same graphic display options as its predecessor. In addition, AutoCAD 3.0 (along with AutoCAD 2.0) introduced the main menu, integrated the application's design tools into a single interface, and included a set of internationalization tools.
The AutoCAD 3.0 platform, with its integrated Windows OS (OS/2), was extended through the release of AutoCAD 4.0 in 1992. A host of graphic improvements were included in AutoCAD 4.0, and the application was extended to include more 2D and 3D features. AutoCAD 4.0 also introduced sophisticated construction and layout tools. With the release of AutoCAD 4.1 in 1993, several improvements were made to the drawing package and 2D toolset.
