From 1986 to 1990, the software was released for several microcomputer systems, including the Apple Macintosh II, the Apple II+, and IBM PC XT, along with minicomputers from DEC, Unisys, and other companies.
More than 5 million AutoCAD users were registered by the end of 1989. By that time, the software was shipping in many different languages including French, German, Spanish, and Italian.
The company also expanded the program's feature set. In 1990, the software included two new file formats: DXF and DWG. The DXF file format, for example, allowed users to describe the basic shapes of a drawing, their location and relationships to one another, and the elevation of those shapes. The DWG file format allowed users to create a drawing and publish it as a PDF file that could be viewed, printed, or further edited.
