AutoCAD began development in the late 1970s as a successor to the pioneering Dymaxion® program by the same company. The name "AutoCAD" was derived from the product acronym for the first release of AutoCAD, Automated Computer-Aided Design.
AutoCAD was first released in December 1982. In January 1983 the first general release AutoCAD 1.0 included a source code editor and included a full feature set, although the color feature was crippled. In 1983 AutoCAD 1.1 was released. At that time, the product was only available as a DOS-based desktop application. It used the National Semiconductor/Texas Instruments 6845 chip. The 6845 also served as the chip for the HP LaserJet II, III and IV printers.
In 1983, Autodesk Inc. acquired the AutoCAD trademark from the Dymaxion Corporation.
In 1983, Autodesk released AutoCAD Mechanical (ACM), which replaced AutoCAD Graphic (now AutoCAD LT). In 1985, Autodesk released AutoCAD for the Macintosh, giving the brand an Apple computer user base. In 1990, Autodesk released an updated version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, which added a number of new features. In 1991, AutoCAD 2.0 was released, and in 1993 AutoCAD 3.0. AutoCAD 1996 (AutoCAD '96) was released in March 1996 with new features like hidden dimensions and a parametric feature. In 1997, AutoCAD 2000 (AutoCAD '2000) was released with new features such as spot welds, a secondary or alternate material feature, and a dimensional constraints feature.
In 2000, AutoCAD 2002 (AutoCAD '2002) was released with new features including an improved interface, data sheets, digital bill of materials, and support for AutoCAD 2002. AutoCAD 2003 (AutoCAD '2003) was released in June 2003 with a more refined user interface and new technology like DXF (dxf) or DWG (dwg) data import. AutoCAD 2004 (AutoCAD '2004) was released in November 2004, and AutoCAD 2005 (AutoCAD '2005) was released in June 2005.

Application software 
The widest range of application software can be used in conjunction with AutoCAD. Software available through the Autodesk Exchange Apps application store includes things like accounting software, golfing software, video editing software, financial and stock market software, and virtual reality and engineering software.
The.NET Framework is available in the Platform Center as a way of developing applications for AutoCAD. AutoCAD also supports COM automation (also known as Component Object Model automation) so that developers can create Microsoft Windows-based applications that interact with AutoCAD. AutoCAD also supports the AutoCAD Development System, which provides a development environment that will help create applications, or solutions.  The Autodesk Exchange App Store contains AutoCAD applications that are published by third-party developers.
Licensing 
AutoCAD 2011/2012/2013/2014/2015/2016/2017/2018 is a commercial, perpetual license product.
AutoCAD LT 2007 and AutoCAD LT 2008 is a perpetual license for Autodesk Architectural Desktop (ADT), an Autodesk portfolio product.
AutoCAD 2015/2016/2017/2018 is a perpetual license.
AutoCAD is bundled with the Autodesk 3D Warehouse when AutoCAD is used for 3D modeling. A concurrent subscription is required to use the 3D Warehouse.
Unlike Autodesk Architecture, AutoCAD does not have a Light edition and does not come with CAD or drafting software.
The AutoCAD brand has been purchased by Autodesk from the Coronis company and released as Autodesk AutoCAD in August 2019.
AutoCAD Architecture, Autodesk’s entry-level architecture software, was discontinued as an Autodesk portfolio product. It is currently available from third-party vendors. Autodesk Architecture Fusion, a feature-rich architectural and urban design package was discontinued as a standalone product and replaced by Autodesk Architectural Desktop. In addition, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Building Information Modeling (BIM), Autodesk Architectural Design (AD), Autodesk AutoCAD 360 for MEP and Autodesk Navisworks were discontinued.
