Photoperiodism
Most of the organisms on earth experience predictable environmental changes; daily, tidal, lunar and seasonal changes. These environmental changes mean different availability of resources and different kinds of stressors at predictable time intervals. It is crucial for an organism to prepare the incoming resources and stressors for its survival in nature. Thus, organisms has evolved to have time-measuring cellular devices. Among the known biological rhythms, a seasonal rhythm plays a major role in many biological processes such as growth, development, reproduction, migration and dormancy, that can increase the survival success of an organism. One compelling hypothesis in regards to the seasonal rhythm is that an organism may ‘interpret’ the season by measuring the day-length, also known as photoperiodism. Photoperiodism is also an important factor that controls seasonal breeding.
