Initially, AutoCAD was not a complete solution. The first version did not include parametric or feature-based drawing, instead relying on interactive wireframes. AutoCAD 1.0 was released in December 1983, and version 1.0s were released in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. The first series of AutoCAD releases was developed by a team at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory called the "Project MAC".
Since then, AutoCAD has been steadily improving, both in terms of graphics and complexity, with software features such as interactive toolbars and new commands. The software has its roots in the MacDraft and AutoCad Grafix Designer products. In addition to Windows, AutoCAD can be run under Linux, OS X, Solaris, and several flavours of Unix. AutoCAD software is installed to the user's hard drive, and in most cases the program is installed automatically with Windows. AutoCAD also has many third-party software add-ons available, such as fonts, brushes, patterns, profiles, and commands.
In July 2010 Autodesk purchased the Revit family of products from Microstation Solutions of Amesbury, Massachusetts. On June 20, 2013, Autodesk announced its intent to combine its AutoCAD and Revit products into a single product. By December 2017, Autodesk had discontinued the AutoCAD product and developed SketchUp as a single, integrated product in its place.
AutoCAD is commonly used in architecture, civil engineering, electrical, mechanical, mechanical engineering, planning and surveying, and software development. In industry, AutoCAD is used by manufacturers of both steel and aluminum products. Many smaller firms use AutoCAD, especially in the construction and building design industries. CAD is used in the medical field for creating medical plans, biomechanical simulations, medical illustrations, 3D medical imaging, and medical post-processing. Computer-aided design is also widely used in the automotive industry.
History
Autodesk AutoCAD and Alias|Wavefront DWG are the two most widely used CAD programs in the world, holding almost half of the market. AutoCAD is older than the PC. The first computers with AutoCAD preinstalled were dedicated hardware built by the MIT Lincoln Lab in the 1980s.

Licensing 
In the past, AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT had been offered on a per-seat basis (i.e., one license per computer), with one user account per computer.
In 2017, AutoCAD was replaced with AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD LT (stand-alone) was released in 2019 and AutoCAD LT (cloud) is planned for 2020.
