History
AutoCAD (originally AutoCad) was first released as a desktop application for the Apple II computer platform in December 1982. The first version was developed by John Walker, who was a systems engineer for McDonnell Douglas. Walker was working in an engineering department at the time. He approached the department chairman to see if he could be put in charge of a new project and chose to develop AutoCAD as his project. He began coding the first version of AutoCAD on an Apple II.
The name AutoCAD refers to the system used to write out the input commands; the "CAD" portion of the name refers to the two-dimensional drawing commands. The name was chosen because Walker felt that it evoked a "CAD" feeling. At the time, "CAD" stood for Computer-Aided Design.
After the release of the first version of AutoCAD, the application was used as a hobbyist product by Walker, who continued to work on it in his spare time. After its introduction, AutoCAD began to become more widely used. By the end of 1983, the number of installations exceeded one thousand. In 1984, the annual number of installations surpassed one million. In 1987, AutoCAD was released for the MS-DOS platform.

AutoCAD for Students, first released in 2012 as part of the Autodesk Education Suite, was designed for student use and the price of the product was $119 for the student version.  At the same time Autodesk also announced AutoCAD 2011 Premium, a premium version of AutoCAD with additional features.  The price of the premium version was $1,299.
In 2014, Autodesk released AutoCAD for Architecture, the first edition of AutoCAD for professional architectural design.
