While the company was founded in 2004, Roblox's origins began in 2002 when Erik Cassel, a programmer from San Jose, California, developed a robot that could text with other people's "shells" over the Internet using the Python programming language. This software was released into the public in 2003 under the name of PyShell.
In 2004, Roblox was formed as an offshoot of Cassel's PyShell project and a server based on the scripting language Lua. At the time, the Lua programming language was under active development, and Roblox initially used the open source version of Lua as its engine.
In the same year, Roblox was founded with several hundred thousand dollars in venture capital funding. The company was originally known as "Virtual Toys" and its first official business outreach was a post on the Web site of a web development firm for early adopters of multimedia platforms. The first game released through Roblox was a text-based MMOG, titled VTC.
In 2004, Roblox made its first revenue by taking 25% of the ad revenue from its first commercial game, the MMOG Emerald which was operated by the online retailer Gamestation Entertainment. This revenue created controversy at the time, as market participants saw Roblox's business model as putting the user at risk for exposure to inappropriate content.
In 2005, the company released its second game, the child-oriented MMOG Emerald II. The open-source counterpart of this game was codenamed "Pyro", and was released by Pyro Studios. During this time, Roblox released the first versions of its platform and tools.
In 2006, the company released its first mobile application for the iPhone. That year, the company moved its operations to Nevada, due in part to the stronger legal protection
