The three major components of Photoshop
As the name would imply, the three main components of Photoshop are the image, the workspace (the editing area), and the history.
The image is what you work with — a document or a picture. The workspace is where you make your images come alive and where you edit them. The history is a chronicle of all the changes you've made.
The basic workflow for an image is this: You open the image in Photoshop, then you select the tools that you need to perform certain tasks and use those tools. When you're done, you save the image and then close Photoshop. That's your basic workflow. You may use several steps in between, but the workflow itself remains the same.
It doesn't really matter if the file is a raster image or a vector. The concept and process of using Photoshop is the same, so if you're a digital painter, this software is great for manipulating your artwork.
Comparing the three major components of Photoshop
The three components of Photoshop — image, workspace, and history — are analogous to the three components of digital paint­ing. An image is the painting; the workspace is the canvas; and the history is the painting's timeline.
In the same way that you don't have to work within the confines of a canvas — it's a great concept, but not always practical — you don't have to work in Photoshop the way it was intended, as a raster editor. You can work on a vector file just as you would work on a raster image. However, the premise of this book is that it is worth learning about a raster editor; many commercial art programs use a raster editor.
Illustrations throughout the book show the differences between raster and vector-based work, and how the process is similar, so that you are able to do some of the same things with a vector image that you could do with a raster image.
