New York City is suprisingly one of the safest places from the coronavirus because of the closures and mask mandate.
 Seeing that New York City and the state of Arizona have used the same strategy to control the outbreak, it has been proven that it works. So why is President Trump going against the head of the CDC, Robert Redfield, when Trump was the one who appointed him? This is the main question in the editorial.
People that are against wearing masks are saying that it goes against the American ideals of freedom and personal expression. The writer of the editorial, Paul Krugman, compares requiring masks to the "no shirt, no shoes, no services" rules that many returants have to show it does not go against American ideals.
Krugman believes that President Trump is politicalizing mask wearing with hopes that it will earn him votes from a certain demographic.

The attitude that the president has towards masks may very well play a part in how the election goes. Whoever wins the election will influence diplomatic relations with the rest of the world.

It is possible that there are a few countries out there that will follow America's lead (even though we would be following the lead of many other countries) if the president were to get on board and issue a nationwide mask mandate. Alternativley, if America is unable to control the coronavirus, it will alter traveling to and from America. A person from a country with the virus under control would not want to travel to America if it has the reputation that the virus is running rampant.
