Development History
AutoCAD has a long history. Originally, AutoCAD was a conceptual idea within Autodesk. It was developed to take advantage of the nascent graphical user interface (GUI) and the advent of a video-based operating system. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD was also released for the Apple Macintosh in 1987. The first versions were developed by the legendary Hal Frankston. Hal first worked at AutoDesk’s office in Cambridge, MA. He was one of the creators of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. He also worked on the software for the original Macintosh computer. Hal later went on to found Landis+Gyr, an architectural engineering company that specialized in the design of buildings with Autodesk. After Landis+Gyr, Hal worked for Autodesk for 10 years, before leaving to start his own architecture firm.
