History of AutoCAD
Autodesk AutoCAD was developed by Michael Fowler in 1981 as a solid modeling application. The first release of AutoCAD was in December 1982, when it was released for both microcomputers with internal graphics controllers and mainframe computers or minicomputers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.
AutoCAD was first licensed for personal use, and was sold for USD 99 on diskettes and was available for DOS, Windows and OS/2 operating systems.

In 2002, AutoCAD was ported from DOS to Windows and released as AutoCAD R16. This release brought changes in the menu bar, the user interface, and database functions.

AutoCAD 2009 and later releases feature workflows for creating workspaces, with an option to work within a community. AutoCAD's new "Dynamics"-based interface was introduced in AutoCAD 2009.
In 2011, AutoCAD was updated with a new user interface and the ability to import DWG and DXF files. It also supported a new license and the introduction of a new subscription model.
In 2012, AutoCAD received a major update with the introduction of revolute- and prismatic-joints.
In 2017, AutoCAD received a major update, featuring a more modern UI, faster load times, enhancements to measurement, drawing, and project tools, and features to help you work faster.

Autodesk has ported most of the AutoCAD product to the Web. Autodesk Internet AutoCAD (AIAC) is an internet application which provides access to AutoCAD data, via a web browser. It allows users to browse, view, print, print from a web browser, export, and import files. It includes features such as electronic drafting and a web design tool.
 Third-party programming tools 
Third-party programming tools offer AutoCAD API functions and services to developers in a wide range of programming languages.

 2017 Update 
After being subject to a series of updates, AutoCAD 2017 no longer supports third-party API's. Third-party developers were advised to transition to AutoCAD's upcoming 2018 release.
The Autodesk Exchange Apps store also no longer offers AutoCAD Add-on products.
