History of AutoCAD
In the early days, AutoCAD was based on DIA (Design Information and Authoring) that was developed at the University of Calgary in the late 1960s and early 1970s. AutoCAD was first released in December 1982. Before AutoCAD, most CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

At the application level, AutoCAD is an application that is based on a visual interface using menus and dialog boxes. A user chooses what to do by moving a cursor around a screen display, selecting items on menus and clicking on buttons, etc.
The application is built using technology called Adobe Flash, which provides the capability to create a web browser based interface. Adobe Flash can provide a web based interface, which is easy to use but requires the use of a browser to be used. Flash can use HTML and JavaScript (e.g. JavaScript files) to provide a user interface. The Adobe Flash application is written using ActionScript, which is one of a number of scripting languages. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are capable of running on the Windows and Mac operating systems as well as Linux.
Mobile applications
AutoCAD is also available for mobile platforms, including Android and iOS. Using the Android OS, AutoCAD runs on a wide range of Android devices such as Smartphones, tablets and handheld computer such as the Archos, as well as some more advanced tablet computers. Using the iOS operating system, AutoCAD runs on a wide range of Apple devices such as iPhones and iPads.
AutoCAD LT Mobile was developed to provide users with enhanced mobile capability when working with the professional-level version of AutoCAD LT, and is available for the Android and iOS platforms. AutoCAD LT Mobile was developed using Apple's Native 2D iOS development toolkit. The application has the same feature set as AutoCAD LT with one major difference; it runs in a separate application.

Operating system-specific user-interfaces
 AutoCAD for Windows: includes a Windows-specific user-interface, optimized for the native Windows operating system.
 AutoCAD for Mac OS X: includes a Mac OS X-specific user-interface, optimized for the native Mac OS X operating system.
Any of the above user-interfaces may be used with AutoCAD for Linux or AutoCAD for Ubuntu.
Stand-alone installer
AutoCAD includes an installer that installs the application and all required pre-requisites on a user's computer.
Deployment
AutoCAD can be installed using the application store for the operating system on which it is being used. The application is also available for download from the developer's web site
