Aeliom is a viewer that renders real time scenery from an octree generated from a topology map and from viewpoint data.
Aeliom is also a compiler that allows user to author scenery thanks to its extended language, based on octree and shaders.
And finally, Aeliom is a render engine with fast lighting, with an advanced star map and atmospheric volumetric lighting. It is based on ray tracing and per pixel rendering, an OpenGL technology.
It can accept user data from other programs using a language called "Aeliom Language", which is an extension of the octree and shader languages.

Aeliom's language is a compiler: when the user types a "specification of the scene to render", Aeliom will produce an interpreter that uses a shader language to render the scene.
This shader language allows to pass data from the scene (viewpoint, objects, materials, lights, sounds, etx) to the shader, while trying to optimize the rendering.
Aeliom language can be used directly or can be used in-directly (Aeliom compiler from other software).

At first, Aeliom uses the OpenGL Render API. It is a highly robust API.
It is based on thousands of variables for each vertex and for each pixel (normal, light, texture, shadow...) which are sometimes written in shaders and sometimes not. Aeliom also uses a "cheap" per-pixel shading technique (minima, maxima, exp).
It allows to have very complex and natural surfaces.
Aeliom also has a programmable lighting system, simple to master for new users, and of good quality.
It takes advantage of advanced shadowing with shadow maps, or with ray casting.
It also allows to use other lighting techniques: diffuse, light planes, material color,...
