AutoCAD is a popular and versatile CAD software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. AutoCAD has a built-in 2D/3D graphical design software called the UCSurface® Surface Designer. UCSurface allows users to easily create 3D surfaces for 3D modeling and 3D visualization. It also creates cross sections, shadow and rendering. It can render images, photos, videos and even animations and simulates light sources. UCSurface is available for Windows, Linux and Apple macOS platforms. AutoCAD also has a.NET Framework implementation called AutoCAD 2010.NET Framework (version 2010) that can create UCSurfaces.

AutoCAD LT's software architecture was based on the entity based object oriented programming. Autodesk announced the release of AutoCAD LT for the iPad and AutoCAD LT 2008 was the first AutoCAD product to support AutoCAD LT on the iPad.
AutoCAD LT 2008 for iPad is compatible with AutoCAD LT Pro 2008.
Among CAD-integration technology is the Microsoft AutoCAD Interop for Visual Studio, an add-in for Microsoft Visual Studio that makes it possible to write code from a.NET or VB-based environment to the AutoCAD API.
When a user edits an element in AutoCAD, it becomes an entity that is then referenced to other entities such as a block, other 2D shapes, line and 3D objects. AutoCAD LT is integrated with AutoCAD LT for Visual Studio.
AutoCAD LT 2008 is integrated with Visual Studio 2008 and earlier, Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2012, Visual Studio 2013, Visual Studio 2015 and Visual Studio 2017. AutoCAD LT 2008 was also released for the Mac platform.
