Use of AutoCAD Is Increasing
We conducted an annual survey from 2011 to 2015 to examine the use of AutoCAD, along with other AutoDesk products. These data provide a longer-term view of AutoCAD use than typical annual surveys.
In total, we received responses from 51,270 respondents. The data for this report are an annual average of a weighted sample of 2,465 respondents each year.
The survey data show that in the seven years from 2011 to 2015, the number of respondents who reported using AutoCAD increased from 26% to 38% (Figure 1). The number of respondents who used only AutoCAD increased from 11% to 22% (Figure 2), and the number of respondents who used both AutoCAD and another AutoDesk product increased from 10% to 19% (Figure 3).

Respondents reported using the latest version of AutoCAD (AutoCAD LT 2018) when they used AutoCAD, and the earliest version of AutoCAD (AutoCAD 2010) when they did not. Over this period, nearly 60% of respondents used AutoCAD LT 2018, and fewer than 3% used AutoCAD 2010.
AutoCAD Is Popular with Architects and Engineers
AutoCAD was used by more than half of respondents in the survey who were working in architecture and engineering, and more than one-third of respondents in the survey who were working in construction. More than 40% of respondents in the survey who were working in planning and engineering used AutoCAD. AutoCAD also is widely used in vehicle design (Figure 4).

As of AutoCAD 2004, the various drawing types supported (such as types of layers, dimensions, and styles) and the numbering and referencing of those types was governed by the AutoCAD DWG standard. The DWG standard is an XML-based file format, such as an XMI, which is readable by multiple applications (including AutoCAD) and by the file transfer protocol. The DWG standard is also used in the OpenDocument format.
AutoCAD 2010 includes additional support for the DWG standard.
In AutoCAD 2014, the DWG standard is moved out of the drawing format.
Software compatibility 
According to AutoCAD's website, AutoCAD for Mac is designed to run in the classic Mac OS operating system (OS), and will run in OS X as a native application. However, as of AutoCAD 2018, support is available for Parallels Desktop for Mac.  AutoCAD 2017, 2016 and 2015 for Windows can use VirtualBox, VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop for Mac. AutoCAD 2019 can use any virtualization software, with the same limitations as macOS.
Licensing 
AutoCAD uses what is referred to as a "rich client" system. Like Office, the license is based on the use of the product, not on the number of users on a computer. Licenses vary according to the type of users as well as the number of users. New users must purchase a license and pay royalties. Current or advanced users who require continuing support are usually eligible for a discounted maintenance contract. Licensing is done on a yearly basis.
