On January 31, 2008, Microsoft released a patch that fixes the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) Laptop Battery Drain Bug. This update resolves the following problem:
The battery in a notebook with Windows XP SP2 or later may drain faster than normal.
This may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
￭ The USB 2.0 controller driver is unable to reset the device.
This problem may occur when you are using an USB 2.0 device that has an IRQ poll. For example, a mouse or keyboard. On older systems, the IRQ polling loop of the mouse or keyboard driver is tied to an interrupt. The interrupt only exists during the polling loop. Therefore, if the PC is idle during the IRQ polling loop of the device, the controller driver is unable to reset the device and the device should be rescheduled for the next poll.
On the other hand, the IRQ polling loop of the USB 2.0 controller for Windows XP SP2 can be scheduled for every four to five milliseconds. This means that the polling loop is never interrupted. As a result, the device controller is unable to reset the device.
￭ The USB 2.0 controller is unable to stop the IRQ polling loop.
This problem may occur when the USB 2.0 controller's interrupt is no longer asserted. For example, the hardware interrupt of a mouse or keyboard is not asserted on the host controller and the device controller is unable to stop the IRQ polling loop.
