I have never been a fan of the Cryptomuseum because it was meant to be a funny parody. However, it has a serious point to make about privacy and data protection. In that it does not exist. You are not the only one affected by how the system of government works. The system of cryptography is currently horribly flawed. The US has been shown to be prone to break into systems and “bug” them. The very fact that we have backdoors in these systems is proof that they don’t actually care how their cryptographic protocol is broken or if someone gets caught with their pants down. Why do we have backdoors? What if someone did find their way in to one of these systems? What do we do with that information? The answer should be obvious. That information will be used to hack more systems. This is more evidence that our government actually does not care how their systems are broken.
But is there anything we can do about this? Yes there is. If everyone gets on board and started using the already available cryptographic protocols, maybe we can start a movement to fix the many flaws in the system of cryptography. I know I am on board for starting this movement. All we need is a system that can be used by people to communicate. And that system is already available, as we will soon see.
The Problem
Recently, there have been many instances of companies using MD5 to protect the information of their users. But when it comes to protecting your information, it’s not just about the algorithm you use. It’s the whole system. As I mentioned earlier, the system of cryptography is horribly flawed. This is not just my opinion. This is in fact the consensus of many cryptographers.
For example, the SHA-1 hash is probably broken, and MD5 should be considered broken. The SHA-1 hash algorithm is too weak for anything useful. If you’re really worried about someone getting access to your information, you should move to SHA-256. The popular and secure "SHA-1" is known to be broken (article).
Now, there are many different hash algorithms. These different hash algorithms include MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2, SHA-3, SHA-4, SHA-5, SHA-6, SHA-7, and SHA-256. The big problem is that there is no standard. A system
