The history of AutoCAD is intertwined with the history of a commercial CAD/drafting market. One of the pioneers in that market was Conrad Klein, who founded the company now known as Charles River Media (CRM) in 1975 to publish and sell CAD tools. Among them was SolidWorks, which was developed in-house at CRM and was first released in 1995.

In 1985, CRM was purchased by a small company called 3D Systems. In the time between CRM’s sale and Autodesk’s acquisition, a much-changed 3D Systems took on the brand name AutoCAD.
