AutoCAD was developed to automate repetitive, vector-based drawing tasks, such as drawing curves and arcs, and objects, such as circles, lines, arcs, and polygons.

User interface 
The user interface for AutoCAD has evolved to meet the needs of its customers.
The user interface for the Windows, Mac and Linux releases are very similar and have been extremely consistent across platforms.
Windows 
The Windows version of AutoCAD uses a Ribbon interface, which provides a tabbed structure to the main menus. An example is the object command toolbar in AutoCAD 2010. The current version of AutoCAD 2019 for Windows allows for an alternate interface using the three-button or tabbed interface as used in Windows 8 and 10. However, the default interface is still the Ribbon.
Mac 
AutoCAD for Macintosh (AA) uses the standard Mac user interface. The drawing window opens in what is called a "Zoomed" view. By default, the view is similar to the one used in the Windows version of AutoCAD. The default view can be changed from the Window menu and it has many properties. The main menu allows one to quickly access tools and preferences. The main commands include, Print, Drawing, Plot, Sheet Set, Add-Ins, View, and Help.
Linux 
AutoCAD for Linux/UNIX is available for all major Linux distributions, including Debian, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Enterprise Linux, and Ubuntu.
Autodesk sells products for a wide range of hardware and operating systems, including Linux, so there are also tools available for the Mac and Windows versions of AutoCAD to run on a Linux platform. AutoCAD users can choose to use the Linux version of the drawing software or use a Windows/Mac version of the software that has been ported to run on Linux.
The Linux version of AutoCAD uses a tabbed interface similar to the Windows and Mac versions of the software. Linux users can also use the traditional Mac interface or they can use a wide variety of third-party applications for the interface.
Vector graphics 
AutoCAD has always supported vector graphics, though the software's command-line interface was not as powerful as that of other commercial vector graphics software.
