About the SOUL Champion Award
The SOUL Champion Award is given annually to Alabama public school teachers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, innovativeness and excellence in promoting the inclusion of students with Special Needs. The SOUL Champion Award focuses on the implementation of strategies such as inclusion, accommodation and/or modifications in all of Alabama’s public schools.
The SOUL Champion Award is an extension of the National Inclusion Project (NIP) and the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Each year, the SREB and NIP recognize individuals and teams who have implemented strategies to promote the inclusion of students with Special Needs.
By recognizing schools and individuals that demonstrate outstanding leadership and proven success in implementing strategies to promote inclusion of students with Special Needs, the SOUL Champion Award recognizes those that are committed to changing lives and transforming educational opportunities for all students.
2019 SOUL Champion Award Recipients
Texas: H.G. Hill IV Elementary School, Carrollton Independent School District
Hill Elementary School in Carrollton, Texas is a Title I school, one of six schools in the district. Several students with special needs were taught at Hill Elementary, but were not included. In order to address the crisis, Hill Elementary School created a program called More Than a Class.
