Typically my Tuesdays at are spent with one of my favorite involvements on campus, Minorities in Medicine (MIMs) @minoritiesinmed! A couple friends and I founded MIMs in 2018 because we felt there needed to be an organization that catered & created a community of minority pre-health students on campus. We wanted it to be a place that students that identified as minorities, in any capacity, as well as those that are allies, could come to in order to get assistance, mentorship, and support from students who have been in their exact same shoes before! We’ve had panels that consisted of current students in medical school and students who are pursuing a career in medicine, professors, and even advice panels. We also put on different social events such as suturing competitions and we even had a game show style competition where students and some professors competed against each other! I love MIMs because not only do we get to mentor underclassmen, but we also get to have some fun and travel to medical schools in the areas. Through that I’ve been able to connect with medical students, post-bacc students, gap year students, and masters students who are on a similar path as I am! We’ve had the chance to go to Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) to see their cadaver lab and George Washington School of Medicine & Health Sciences to tour the campus and get some MCAT study tips! Being involved in MIMs, has allowed me to connect with people I would’ve never had the chance to before both here at #williamandmary! It has also given me the chance to have a positive impact of those younger than me who are pursuing a similar path and to be a mentor to them so they can be best prepared to be successful here! -Courtney! Happppy Wednesday folks!! 🐪 I love being involved in research here at #williamandmary! Whether as a participant or as one of the primary research investigators, it has been a great chance to learn more about something that I haven’t had the chance to learn about in the classroom. I’ve started research the Summer after my Freshman year and I have had an amazing time ever since. Not only did I get to stay on campus for free, I had the chance to do research full time and I received a Charles Grant as well! I currently do research in the Neuroscience/Psychology department & we actually get to study brain waves! In previous semesters, we’ve placed EEG caps (picture 2) on participants’ heads and electrodes are then placed in the caps and we can get a read on their brain waves during and after the actual experiment. 🧠 How cool is it that we can study and see what different areas of the brain “light up” when looking for a certain response!? (I think it’s pretty cool btw 😁) Not only have I had the chance to work with participants, I’ve also analyzed data, and this semester my research lab & research advisor are brainstorming some ways to expand one of the research experiments we have going on! If you have something you’re curious about or have seen a professor doing some cool research you may be interested in, I strongly urge you to go talk to them about it and get involved! It’s a great experience! ~swipe to the end to see one of the many dishes me and my friend cooked over one of the summers we spent here!!~ 😋 -Courtney! (@court.barr) 🤘🏾
