AutoCAD was created to serve the needs of architects, engineers, and draftsmen who work with technical drawings, and other design professionals. Architecture and code base
AutoCAD is an "entity-oriented" application. Rather than a 3-dimensional (3D) representation, AutoCAD provides 2-dimensional (2D) views of a 3D model. Model entities (e.g., faces, edges, text, and arcs) are stored as entities within the application, and are manipulated as such, rather than working with the data from a particular point of view.
Like many software applications, AutoCAD makes use of objects, which are represented using the term "catalog items". These include editable items, such as text, lines, arcs, and so on, and system-defined items, which are not editable.
AutoCAD supports a wide range of file types, including *.dwg, *.dxf, *.dbf, *.dwg, *.dwf, and *.shp. These are file formats designed to be read or written by AutoCAD
