History
AutoCAD was initially developed as "AutoCAD 1982" for the Apple II series of microcomputers by Ken Bosak, a freelance CAD designer who owned a number of early microcomputers including the Apple II, the IMSAI 8080, the IMSAI 8080 Plus and the IMSAI 8080A, as well as early ADI electric drafting boards. After Ken Bosak introduced the software, he and his business partner and co-founder Terry Whittlesey designed and built his own portable computer, the R20, and began marketing it. Autodesk was incorporated in 1982, and Autodesk received $500,000 from Bosak and Whittlesey to develop software. The R20 computer became the foundation for the company's Macintosh line of computers, which was also the foundation of the rest of the company's product line. Autodesk released a version of AutoCAD for the Apple II in 1983.
In the late 1980s, Terry Whittlesey approached software developer John Walker with the idea of building a new professional-level 2D drafting software application based on the Applesoft BASIC programming language. Autodesk's original plan for AutoCAD was to be a graphics application that would eventually replace the existing Apple II CAD programs that were widely used in the Apple II community. To accomplish this, Autodesk needed to design, develop and market a high-performance commercial 2D drafting software application that would run on a low-cost, low-power 32-bit microcomputer.  AutoCAD Architecture 
AutoCAD Architecture, released in 1997, was an application specifically designed to support the creation and editing of 2D architectural plans and drawings. It allowed the creation of custom layouts and displays to quickly and easily create plans and drawings of building projects in a graphical environment. The application supported the creation and editing of 3D views of architectural plans and drawings, was capable of displaying and exporting 2D plans and 3D views of the same plan, and included powerful capabilities for graphical transformations and comparisons. AutoCAD Architecture provided users with powerful and easy-to-use tools that made it possible for them to view, edit, generate, and maintain their architectural plans in a unified 2D and 3D environment.
AutoCAD Architecture was renamed Autodesk Revit in September 2014. AutoCAD Architecture is discontinued but is still available in the subscription program.
AutoCAD Project
The AutoCAD Project program allows users to design project-level information, such as the construction of a building or home improvement project. AutoCAD Project allows users to import files from external sources into a project and import from a variety of formats, including DWG, DXF, and DGN. The user can place files and components, create drawings from these components, and view files and components from within the project. AutoCAD Project includes features for the creation of work breakdown structures, task lists, estimates, and materials.
