Graded involvement of the myocardial microcirculation in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy in the Zucker diabetic fatty rat.
The Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rat develops a progressive cardiomyopathy that can be prevented by insulin treatment. This study investigated the role of the vascular bed in diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction. Male ZDF and ZDF-insulin-treated rats were compared to nondiabetic Zucker lean rats after 5 months of diabetes. To detect microvascular changes, the diabetic rats were also compared to nondiabetic Zucker lean rats after 5 months of hypoxia or exposure to the gas mixture used in the two-kidney, one-clip model of renal hypertension (2K1C). Blood and organ samples were collected after echocardiography or cardiac catheterization. Fasting plasma glucose concentration was increased in ZDF and ZDF-insulin-treated rats compared to ZL, although insulin treatment of the diabetic rats had normalized the glucose concentrations. A significant reduction in left ventricular fractional shortening was observed in the diabetic rats. The inability of insulin treatment to prevent the development of systolic dysfunction was evident from echocardiographic and catheterization data. Diabetic rats had increased left ventricular end diastolic pressure, decreased aortic elastic constants, and decreased microvascular density. Compared to ZL, hypoxia-induced hypertension resulted in increased cardiac weight and left ventricular diastolic pressure, and reduced cardiac function, as assessed by echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and isolated perfused heart experiments, but had no effect on the microvasculature. However, 2K1C hypertension resulted in marked increases in both absolute and relative heart weight and left ventricular end diastolic pressure, and modest decreases in aortic elastic constants. There was a loss of capillaries in left ventricular subendocardial and subepicardial arterioles and small arteries. The development of systolic dysfunction in ZDF diabetic rats occurred in parallel

Open Source doesn't mean Free.
You could try using open source products with your Open Source OS, or even just run the software with Wine. Or there is always virtualization.
One problem with Virtualization is that you need a license to use it. For me, the best option to get something up and running is:
VirtualBox
Which is available to download for free.
Install VirtualBox
Download VirtualBox.app from Apple
Open VirtualBox, and choose New from the Menu
Create a new Virtual Machine, and select New Linux.
Give it a name.
Give it a description.
Choose the Host IP Address (from the list)
Select Target and click Finish
Install Windows in the virtual box
Get the exe file from the Microsoft site, it's a self extracting archive.
Expand the file, and copy the file into the virtual machine
Add the command:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
Change the nvidia-current to nvidia-current-updates depending on where you live. I had to change the name to get it to work, but it installed.
Select "Install 3D Acceleration" and click OK.
If you don't have a Windows license, the best option is to install Windows in VirtualBox.
Some Problems
We need to set the ram to 1024 MB, as Windows can't really run with less. If you use more, I don't know if it will work, I am running the 32 bit version. You will have to test it for yourself.
Your CPU might be too slow (mine is a Pentium D)
VirtualBox is slow, and sometimes unresponsive.
It takes a while to start.
VirtualBox is not free, you need to either get the trial version, or if you really want to use it you will need to purchase a license.
Get the Open Source Edition of VirtualBox
This is available from the VirtualBox website, and is Free.
The only difference is that it is the Open Source edition. It works the same and is Free.
