From AutoCAD to AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD was originally developed in 1982 for Microsoft MS-DOS, but after the introduction of Microsoft Windows in 1985, AutoCAD became more broadly available. In 1994, the application was made available for Apple Macintosh. The first version of AutoCAD LT was released for Windows 3.1 in May 1998. The first version for Apple Mac OS X was released in May 1999. A Macintosh version of AutoCAD LT was released in September 2005. AutoCAD LT runs on Windows XP or later. AutoCAD LT is not available on the Mac, although macOS releases of AutoCAD software (not LT) are available.
In 2008, the original AutoCAD application was renamed to AutoCAD 2010. AutoCAD 2013 was released in 2010 with many new features. In 2013, AutoCAD was acquired by Autodesk and AutoCAD 2009, 2010, and 2013 are all referred to as AutoCAD. AutoCAD LT 2009, 2010, and 2013 are referred to as AutoCAD LT.
An early marketing opportunity for AutoCAD was the ability to create a drawing of a building in 2D with a pencil and then, without having to copy and paste, easily alter the design in 3D.
