In 1982, AutoCAD was introduced as a desktop app to run on the Xerox Alto, a personal computer with a built-in graphics adapter. Autodesk's first CAD software, it was originally sold as DGN, and was derived from the Freehand drawing program. It was sold on floppy disk.
In August 1987, Autodesk launched AutoCAD Revit, an entirely new application for designing and engineering buildings. Autodesk released AutoCAD 2.0 on 22 November 1991. As the first major release of a major product since 1990, 2.0 featured a new graphics engine, new screens and workspaces, a revised navigation scheme and more comprehensive documentation.
