Introduction
Sick Building Syndrome, or SBS, is the culmination of acute health and comfort effects in building occupants after spending time in a building considered “sick”. A “sick” building might have a lack of natural light, an excess of toxic chemicals or microbes in the air, insufficient ventilation, and a variety of other situations that can affect health and wellbeing. This topic is very prevalent today since most people spend an average of 90% of their time indoors, and many buildings are not up to par with new and innovative solutions and safety measures. SBS can affect anyone, but it is most dangerous for vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and minority populations in lower-quality housing. Workplaces can often be noisy, dim, and have relics of the past such as windows that don’t open or allow circulation of air.  School buildings are often outdated and can pose significant risk to school children, yet there is very little research into SBS-related health issues in school populations. Additionally, lower-income housing is often a cause for many SBS symptoms and puts populations who are already disadvantaged at greater risk. However, there are solutions offered by the green housing movement. There are new methods of construction, sustainable building materials, and innovative products and solutions that should be explored and implemented when appropriate in order to make indoor spaces as safe as possible. When these changes are implemented, SBS symptoms are reduced and indoor air quality improves. From an economic and public health lens, these changes in how we construct and maintain buildings can have significant benefits for everyone.
