Overview
In 1998, a reorganization of the software industry saw Autodesk acquire the majority of TAB Engineering Group (TAB), developers of AutoCAD MEP, the AutoCAD architectural and MEP component of the Autodesk portfolio. However, the company continued to develop AutoCAD as a stand-alone software application. A similar transaction in the 2009 brought AutoCAD to Autodesk again. The new acquisition was valued at US$1.84 billion.
AutoCAD is an industry standard for the creation of architectural, mechanical, electrical and construction documents. In 2013, AutoCAD received the ISO/IEC 15288-2 standard for building information modeling (BIM), that is available for download as a free extension to AutoCAD, as well as other CAD programs.
In November 2015, Autodesk was acquired by The Blackstone Group, a private equity firm. It is now a subsidiary of The Blackstone Group.

9 AutoCAD is, and has always been, an expensive product. While there is no cost-free version, many firms have been known to simply purchase additional licences of the product when they want to do a large batch of work.
Note that AutoCAD is mainly aimed at the professional engineering and architectural industries. As such, it has some features that are not aimed at the home user. Almost every project in AutoCAD is created as a drawing or a project file. A drawing is a complete and self-contained CAD model. It can be used as a stand-alone data set to design various products, such as furniture, a washing machine, or any other physical product. It can be exported into many formats to be viewed in a presentation, printed on a computer screen, or used in a 3D CAD (CAD/CAM) system, such as Rhino. AutoCAD has a built-in 3D solid modelling system. A project is a set of drawings (and possibly files) that are related to one another and share common annotations. A project is a project file (.dwg).
It is common practice in the automotive industry to create the initial project file and then import all the files needed to manufacture the part. These imported files include as-built data, such as the sheet metal, its detail, or tooling information, as well as a fabrication history of the parts.
