Overview

Draw, colour and exchange paper face masks inspired by scary folklore characters, along with a short description. Let's vote and find the scariest European monster this Halloween!

Aims

In this project students will learn in a fun way about folklore characters from all over Europe. Similarities and differences will arise! The project will expand their cultural awareness and writing skills. Drawing skills will also be challenged because the masks produced are going to be later a subject of voting. The project will also involve scanning pictures which is going to be a new skill for most of the participants.

Work Process

Each participating teacher will select a class or two which is going to work on this project. During English lessons, the students will be asked to work in pairs or groups and think of which scary character from their folkore they want to work on. Consequently, they're going to write a short description of the monster chosen: where he lives, what scary things he does, what he eats etc.
In the meantime, they're going to create a facemask of that character from paper and art materials. This can happen in Art, Craft or English classes. All students can make their mask individually and then the class will vote which one will represent their country (in our case the Czech Republic) abroad. Depending on the number of participating schools, there may be two or three masks of the same character travelling to other countries.
The masks can be scanned and sent to the schools along with the short description. If the schools have enough resources, though, the masks can also be sent to other countries by post. This will be much more special.
When each school receives masks from different countries, they will organise an exhibition (online or physical) with an option for all students of the school to vote on the scariest character.
On Halloween we can have an online event where the winners in each country are announced.

Timeframe:

1-3rd week of October: drawing the masks, writing the stories, sending the masks and stories by email or post
4th week of October: exhibitions and voting
30 October: voting is closed. Counting votes.
31 October: online event with winners announced
