AutoCAD is a 2D CAD program. The drawing area is called the canvas and consists of a grid of squares or other geometric shapes. Shapes can be modified to create different views of the drawing.
There are two types of shapes: blocks and lines. A block is a rectangle or other shape that can be modified in any way. A line can be manipulated in any way, but its ends have a square, circle, or other geometric form. Lines can be connected together to form other shapes.

You can move the Grid to any of its eight views, but the normal default view is based on the drawing area. This means that when you start a new drawing, the drawing area is divided into four equal horizontal bands and eight equal vertical bands.
