History of AutoCAD
Development began at General Electric’s Pratt & Whitney Division in 1977, and then at the Information Sciences Division in 1979. The program was written in PL/1 and first released in December 1982 as AutoDraft II. AutoDraft II was a version of the PL/1 editor/compiler, developed by Paul McBride at General Electric, which drew on ideas from PL/1's forerunner, the PL/I interpreter. AutoDraft II was similar to yet incompatible with the PL/I Editor version, which was one of the first PL/I versions on the market.
The first release of AutoCAD was code-named "SuperDraft", because it was used to draft the drawings for GE's new corporate logo. The program’s developer was GE's first employee, John Callahan. In 1984, AutoCAD was rewritten in Pascal by Bill McKee. Then, in 1987, it was re-written again in C, this time by Michael Krogsgaard, with the first version released as AutoCAD 2.0. This version introduced an internal program manager that allowed other developers to add more features. This version allowed 3D drawings.
In 1990, Autodesk, Inc. acquired AutoCAD and made AutoCAD available for the MS-DOS platform. In 1994, AutoCAD CADD was released as an independent product and remains a core part of AutoCAD today. In 1995, CADD was rebranded AutoCAD, and the following year CADD was merged into AutoCAD. In 1997, in response to the growing popularity of Windows, AutoCAD was introduced as a Windows-based product. AutoCAD 2002, released in 1999, was the first version of AutoCAD to be released under the name "AutoCAD". That same year, AutoCAD also saw the release of its first native Windows GUI (Graphical User Interface), with the release of AutoCAD LT.
Basic Features
AutoCAD is a CAD program for 2D drafting, drawing, and drafting and design with 3D modeling capabilities. It has all the features and tools to create 2D architectural, mechanical, and construction drawings, as well as 3D models.

Display of the selection mask on the drawn surface is available via the xref attributes of the DM commands which have the same name as the mask object, that is, "DXFMask". (This functionality is available via AutoCAD 2013, and prior versions.)

 Any application can read and write drawing objects. Some applications use a standard interface, such as the.dwg or.dxf file format, to store the drawing objects; others store the objects in a proprietary format.
 The most common way to search for drawings in the drawing database is by file name. The command "Find Drawing" allows the user to perform a search based on the filename. This is the primary method of finding and locating drawing objects in the drawing database. 
Autodesk is developing its next-generation product AutoCAD LT to be 100% cloud-based. It is a web-based CAD software for Autodesk Architecture and Construction customers in the construction industry, the same customers who are users of Autodesk Autocad. Autodesk LT will use the same cloud-based technology and architecture of the Autodesk Navisworks product for creation and editing of construction related documents.
Operation
An AutoCAD drawing is broken down into discrete objects, which are then linked together in a hierarchical fashion to form a complete object model. An entire drawing is a collection of objects. A drawing consists of one or more.dwg or.dxf files and one or more.arcp files. An.arcp file is a description of the drawing at a higher level of detail.
When a drawing is opened, the drawing file is first read into memory and loaded into the graphics card. The.arcp file is then read into memory and loaded into the graphics card. The.arcp file contains information on the drawing in terms of layers, objects, clipping path and viewing filters. The drawing is then displayed on the computer screen.
