In the early 1980s, CAD software started to appear on personal computers. This change from the traditional mainframe and minicomputer CAD systems to the PC market attracted interest and investment from several major software companies. In 1982, Autodesk, a small graphics company started developing software for the new Personal Computer. Autodesk’s first offering was AutoCAD, a 2D and 3D application for drafting and creating architectural, mechanical and electrical plans.
The year 1982 saw AutoCAD's first release as a desktop app on Microsoft MS-DOS computers with internal graphics controllers. The app was a clone of Micro-Tech's MicroCAD. To try it, users would load the software into their computer, then start it up and load a drawing file. While AutoCAD loaded, the screen would display the menus and prompt for commands. Typing and moving the cursor was done with a serial-bus mouse, which connected to the computer with a USB port, or other serial-bus devices. The MS-DOS version of AutoCAD was only for the MS-DOS operating system, so if the user moved their mouse to the edge of the screen, the program would stop running.

All data in a drawing is stored in a database.
File names include the date on which the file was created. If a drawing is not saved to disk, it is said to be in "invisible" mode. The "save on disk" command is only used to save to disk. A drawing may be opened and saved many times. Each time it is saved the file has a new name.
Data in a drawing is described as "locked", which means that it is not accessible to other files in the same drawing database. If a drawing is not saved to disk, it is said to be in "invisible" mode. In contrast, a drawing that is open is "visible" in that it is accessible by all the drawings in the drawing database.
When a new drawing is created, its properties (such as the default layer, linetype, and colour) are stored in a "properties file", which is accessed by the database. The database can be either a table or an RDBMS (relational database management system). The file used to store the properties is usually named "properties.bin". It is usually created automatically when a new drawing is created. When a drawing is saved, its properties are updated with the properties from the properties file. The properties file has a fixed size. If the file is bigger than the size of the properties file, the excess information is "truncated".
Once a drawing is saved, it can be read by any other drawing in the same drawing database. It is stored as a series of object blocks. These are referred to as "object blocks". When a drawing is saved, its object blocks are updated with the data that the drawing is to be saved to disk.
A drawing that is open can also be "saved". Saving is not the same as saving a drawing to disk; a drawing saved in this way is not accessible by any other drawing in the database. A drawing can be saved to disk many times.
When a new drawing is created, its properties are stored in an "info file" that is accessed by the database. The file used to store the properties is usually named "info.bin".
A drawing is visible when it is open. Visibility is controlled by the properties of the drawing. When the properties are adjusted, the changes are applied to the objects in the drawing and can be saved to disk.
