The original release of AutoCAD in 1989 was a proprietary AutoLISP implementation. 
In 1991, Autodesk released the first commercial release of AutoCAD, called AutoCAD 2.5. AutoCAD 2.5 was based on a general purpose markup language called "DWF". AutoCAD 2.5 included several components of the Autodesk DWF format and also included an AutoCAD-specific DWF format. The proprietary DWF format was dropped in 1996, to be replaced by the DGN+ format for the drawing format. AutoCAD 2.5 had many capabilities and design-specific features, including path tracing, AutoCAD-specific DWF support and several object-specific drawing features.
In 1996, the DGN+ format was released as AutoCAD Standard in AutoCAD 2.6. The DWF format was not replaced but kept as an optional file format. The DGN+ format includes the DWF capability. AutoCAD 2.6 had some advanced features such as spline and arc fitting, and basic support for linked objects (called “linked components”). AutoCAD 2.6 was also the first version to support Dynamic Components (dynamic objects).
In 1997, with AutoCAD 3.0, the DGN+ format was replaced with the native XREF format. The DWF format was dropped in favor of the DGN+ format. Autodesk discontinued AutoCAD 2.6 in favor of AutoCAD 3.0. AutoCAD 3.0 had several notable design and feature improvements, including the inclusion of the Dynamic Component technology.
In 1999, the first release of AutoCAD Architecture was released. In this release, AutoCAD was only available for the Windows platform, the Graphical User Interface was rewritten, and support was added for the DGN+ format. The architecture format was used to create 2D and 3D models and to exchange designs between architects and engineers.
In 2002, the first release of AutoCAD Architecture was renamed to AutoCAD LT. Autocad LT was a competitor to similar software available for the Macintosh platform, such as CorelDRAW.
