The reign of House Targaryen begins: House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is here. Based on George R.R. Martins Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen. House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine (HBOs The Third Day and The Outsider), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Olivia Cooke, Emma DArcy, Steve Toussaint (Its a Sin, Doctor Who), Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, and Rhys Ifans. Additional cast members include Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn. As House of the Dragon ramps back up in production, Olivia Cooke — who plays Queen Alicent Hightower — assured Collider that the spinoff series will deliver a similar level of character complexity.Whats amazing about Game of Thrones, like we saw in the past series, is that one season, you hate a character, and the next, you absolutely love them and will go to the ends of the earth for them, Cooke said. You just dont know what youre gonna get with these characters. Theyre so well-written. Such is the human condition, you can do some horrendous things, but then you can also do some wonderful things as well. Its very complex, and its not black and white at all.In a holding patternLike many television and film projects, certain aspects of development on House of the Dragon were brought to a halt. The series was still in the early stages of scripting when productions were shut down around the world, so it remains to be seen how much the lockdown will delay the series.Premiere dateIn an interview with Deadline, HBOs president of programming, Casey Bloys, said the new series will air sometime in 2022. Bloys did not offer additional detail about the show except to say that writing for the series is underway and that although several other Game of Thrones successors are in the works, House of the Dragon is the primary focus.There are no other blinking green lights or anything like that, Bloys said. Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no immediate plans.
